From our Chair, Hugh Langmuir: Christ Church is a beautiful church in the heart of Kensington. Designed by Benjamin Ferrey, it has been the neighbourhood’s spiritual, cultural and community centre for more than 170 years, akin to a village hall and local park for the area. As well as being home to a thriving congregation of local residnets and students, teh building is a space constantly in use by groups including Alcoholics Anonymous, local schools, a Montessori nursery, a gardening charity, a ballet school, residents’ associations and the elderly. The gardens are a verdant haven of peace and tranquillity in our otherwise bustling borough. In our densely built-up area, this patch of green is much loved. Our own Community Trust events attract a large local audience and serve to bring us all together in evenings of community connection. Around 900 people use the garden or building every week. Unfortunately, this vital social amenity is now at risk. Major and thus, costly, repairs to the Victorian tower are required to conform to 2024 standards to guarantee the future use of the building and gardens, estimated to cost upward of £600k. A substantial contribution to these repairs will be made by the church itself, but the amount of funding required makes support from the local community essential. Christ Church Community Trust – a secular body whose purpose is to preserve the fabric and gardens of the church for the benefit of the local community – is leading the ‘Save the Tower’ appeal, to fill the gap. Please consider supporting our appeal for the benefit of our community and the preservation of our heritage.
